I have family in PR & go there alot. I can tell you exactly what animals they have.
Out in the wild you will see lizards. Lots of little green lizards. There is even a white colored house gecko that you see occasionally. Also iguanas, they are not native to PR, but after pet shops let some loose there are alot. Also the Coqui. This is a small tree frog that is a symbol for Puerto rico. The frog is the size of a quarter & sings "co-qui". They were originally only found in PR but now live in other caribbean islands & Hawaii. I heard there are a few monkeys living around that esaped from a zoo, but I have never seen 1. There are snakes also. There is a puerto rican boa & some small types of snakes. In El Yunque you might be able to spot the endangered puerto rican parrot along w/ other birds like humming birds. & there are alot of bats at night all over the island. There are a few wild mongoes that carry rabies in the yunque also but i have never seen it. There is a legend of a creature called the 'chupacabra' but has never been proved. & there are mice & rats that are pest like anywhere else. But PR has no large wild animals.
Also there are alot of farm animals like cows, pigs, horses, chickens, etc. Chickens are eaten of course & also used for sport b/c in PR they have cockfights. The roosters fight each other & people bet on it, they even have colliseums just for this. Horses are also transportaion for some. & the famous "paso fino" horse is a prize posession. They have a funny walk but it is a smooth ride, so to say. & of course people have the same type of pets like dogs, cats, birds & goldfish.
There are lots of tropical fish like Barracuda, kingfish, mullet, Spanish mackerel & tunaThere are also lobsters, crabs, shrimp, oysters, etc. There are alot of mosquitos around. They can also carry Dengue virus like any other caribbean place. Some other bugs are american cockroaches, butterflies & caterpillars, spiders, ants & fire ants that bite, millipeeds, flies, bees, etc. Also PR has 3 bioluminescent bays. There are only 5 or 6 worldwide. This water glows in the dark when you touch it b/c of a microorganism called dinoflagellates.
